Cast On A Cupcake [25 Jan 2007|11:08pm]
I've moved!!

I've been seduced by a differend blog format, and have created a new blog!

castonacupcake.blogspot.com

The idea is to merge two loves of mine- baked goods and knitting. And knit baked goods, which I recently discovered.

Update links and all that!

Knit City! [25 Jan 2007|03:12pm]
I have a strange addiction. Knitting blogs! I spend so much time reading knitting blogs, I don't have time to knit or read real things (like political blogs. Or, you know... books.)

But, inspired by several things I saw on blogs, here is what I'm knitting now!

Yes, it's a cupcake! Yes, I work at a bakery. And yes, we might be selling these at the bakery. Best Valentine ever.

My room mate loves squirrels. So I knew I had to knit her these when I first saw the pattern. Also, my favorite project bag.

And something for me- with yarn bought for 50 cents a skein at a Goodwill. A pair of mittens and a cute side-button top-down raglan sweater.

my dad [21 Jan 2007|09:44pm]
i took a quiz and this is the answer:

Your Daddy Is Darth Vader

What You Call Him: Pops

Why You Love Him: Because he's your baby daddy

It's not true, but it's funny because we're estranged. We're like Angelina Jolie and John Voigt.

What I really think of my friends... [07 Jan 2007|08:44pm]
[ mood | satisfied ]

What You Really Think Of Your Friends
Laura is your soulmate.
You truly love Liz.
You consider Mike your true friend.
You know that Emily is always thinking of you.
You'll remember Vanessa for the rest of your life.
You secretly think Mom is creative, charming, and a bit too dramatic at times.
You secretly think that Anne is colorful, impulsive, and a total risk taker.
You secretly think that Meg is loyal and trustworthy to you. And that Meg changes lovers faster than underwear.
You secretly think Evan is shy and nonconfrontational. And that Evan has a hidden internet romance.

Good things about feminism from all these new and exciting blogs I'm discovering.

Disaster Preparedness Captain [23 Dec 2006|12:26pm]
[ mood | unprepared ]

In the past three days, we've had three 3.2-3.7 sized earthquakes. The first, I was at work, next door to the fire station, and I thought it was a fire truck. The second was last night at 10:30 and there was rumbling and definite floor rocking movemet. The third was just now, at 9:30 this morning, with more shaking and rumbling.

Leading up to "the big one", I've heard that faults usually send out several smaller earthquakes. While I'm glad to have felt some earthquakes since being here, I certianly don't want to be here when my old cement apartment building falls down.

The fault is the Hayward fault, two miles east of Berkeley, which is "due" for a big earthquake.

I was elected Disaster Preparednedd Captain of my apartment (by a unanimous vote by Liz and Laura), so I'm in charge of flashlights, bottled water, and discovering where the gas shut-off valve is.

Because I'm sick and can't sleep... [22 Dec 2006|03:29am]
[ mood | sick ]

Some lists about my life!

Great things I have seen while walking in my neighborhood:
1. A large jar of maraschino cherries on top of a garbage can. It was there for several days.
2. "Il faut aimer" graffittied onto the phone booth outside the library.
3. A man yelling "Guatemala! Guatemala!" into his cell phone.
4. Many, many cute babies. (Mostly at work, and not walking around.)
5. All four seasons at once (frost, falling orange leaves, sprouting bulbs, and lots of rain, which means spring back where I come from).
6. The vegetable garden the people across the street have in the grass between the sidewalk and the road. Squashes and tomatoes and other things, which I'm sure are delicious, but have been covered with a plastic tarp since we moved in)

Things I knit for Christmas:
4 scarves
1 1/2 hats (my brother's isn't done. And technically, it's two hats anyways, because Keith's is lined, which means two hats joined together at the brim. Like a big tube.)
2 (soon to be unravelled) bolero / shrug minisweaters
1 headband-thing (here)

Number of people whose presents I made / am making: 9
Number of people whose presents I bought / will buy: 4
Number of people whose presents I found: 1 (it's like regifting...)
Number of people who will receive their presents after Christmas: 5 (everyone except Mike's family. It's ok, I don't believe in Jesus anyway. Also, check out some actual, for real virgin births!)

I'm officially in love with knitting again. Also, I love knitting blogs. And pictures of other people's knitting. I can't put up pictures of my knitting, because it's all presents and people might see their own present!

PS. Is it ok to just roll / fold up a knitted project, tie a ribbon on it, and call it wrapped? I can't afford gift wrap and boxes, and you can't just roll a scarf up in wrapping paper anyway.

PPS. Claudia gives great book suggestions. I just finished In Cold Blood, and finished East Of Eden a while ago. They were both fantastic. If you ever need to get into law school or read a good book (or watch a good movie, for that matter)- Claudia is your woman.

Crazy hippies from California, think love can solve everything!

It'd not a bad idea- at least a bunch of people will feel great just before hanging out with their families for a few crazy days.

bikes [15 Nov 2006|05:44pm]
So, since my bike was stolen on Halloween, it's been very sad. I'm ok when I don't think about it, since I work two blocks away from home, but we went to a few bike shops today and that made me think about how I don't have a bike. So, I think I'm going to try to build a bike, maybe. It should be a fun adventure.

NH = True Blue [08 Nov 2006|12:33am]
[ music | Mike's conducting to some symphony... ]

Way to go NH!

Gov = Dem
both congessional reps = Dem (and one's a woman!)

Too bad now that I live in CA, all the state officials are Republicans. I moved out of a red state as it turned blue and into a blue state as it turns red.

Vote vote vote [07 Nov 2006|01:48pm]
[ music | Democracy Now ]

Today I will become a real Californian. Voting against Arnold, and for the first time ever, voting on ballot propositions! (Yes on R, Yes on F, No on 85, Yes on 87, No on 90!) Also, my district in NH will most likely elect a Democratic Representative (WMUR).

I moved into my Berkeley apartment last weekend, and got a job on Friday! I work at Nabolom Bakery, which is collectively owned, and uses mostly organic and local ingredients. My room mate Liz and I are both working there (it was a little confusing, and went something like this: "Hi, our name is Liz. We would like to apply for the job. We live together. We worked at the same place. hire us!" And they did.) In six months, when I can buy into the collective, I might own a bakery!

Also, we have a fully furnished apartment and Mike and I are going to Texas for Thanksgiving. As long as I don't go broke, November is going to be great!

chez Berkeley! [20 Oct 2006|12:57pm]
[ music | Tyler & Paul (I think) ]

I have an apartment in Berkeley! Laura, Liz, and I will move in next weekend! It's a two bedroom, with a private backyard, a dishwasher, and washing machine and dryer.

Before we move in there, however, Mike and I have to move his trailer to another space in Sonoma Grove. Last year, this wonderful oasis of trees and quiet in amongst the strip malls and apartment complexes in Rohnert Park was bought by a woman who has a history of buying trailer parks, raising rent, evicting people, and turning them into lucrative RV-parks. She is doing just that to the Grove, which has been student and low-income housing since the 70s. We have to move our trailer from the front of the park, where all the trees (and trailers) have been removed to make way for the "transient" RVs (those huge, bus-like ugly mostrosities you see driving down the highway), to the back of the park, where all the residents have been crammed in. We're hoping to salvage our beautiful rose bush and move it with us, but I'm not optimistic we are capable enough rose-growers to manage it.

There's a good article on the Grove's situation here.

wikipedia lies? [10 Oct 2006|10:27pm]

[ music | they might be giants ]

The other day I randomly went to a Wikipedia article on Mount Holyoke, and saw, listed under traditions, M&Cs! However, the article defined them as "Milk and Crackers". I diligently edited the article to the correct Milk & Cookies definition. However, I went back today to find this:

"M&C's (or Milk and Crackers, not Milk and Cookies [21]): From Sunday through Thursday evenings, at 9:30 p.m. dormitory dining halls open to serve an evening snack. In her 1977 play about Mount Holyoke, Uncommon Women and Others, alumna Wendy Wasserstein referred to m&c's in Act 1, Scene 5: "It's fun to see the girls at tea and Milk 'n' Crackers too.""

They also cite the mtholyoke.edu website, where M&Cs are again referred to as Milk & Crackers! Has something happened in the last year? Am I wrong?

Nutrition School [10 Oct 2006|09:45pm]
[ mood | content ]
[ music | the shins ]

In the one month of unemployment that is now stretching into two, I have spent most of my time reading about nutrition and food, and applying that new knowledge to cooking, grocery shopping, and baking. It's been really, really fun. I love that the only thing I am spending money on (aside from gas, commuting to Berkeley to look for places to live) is organic delicious food.

I just started reading Michael Pollan's book The Omnivore's Dilemma, and it's really great. (I also loved The Botany of Desire. He's a great author writing about the absurdity of our American relationship with agriculture. He also wrote a great article about the absurdity of the American lawn. http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=33)

Michael Pollan's 6 Rules for Eating Wisely:
1. Don't eat anything your great-great-great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. (Eat food, not food products)
2. Avoid foods containing high fructose corn syrup.
3. Spend more, eat less.
4. Pay no heed to nutritional science or the health claims on packages.
5. Shop at the farmers' market.
6. How you eat is as important as what you eat.
http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=77

I am really enjoying domesticity. It feels really good to be fortunate enough to have the time and money to make delicious, homemade organic and local meals.

Watching... [03 Oct 2006|05:08pm]
I've been following the growth of a rosebud on the bush outside my house. I've tried to take a picture every day- these four represent 4 days of development.

I also baked two delicious loaves of pumpernickel bread.
